2018 Minnesota Sings Judges
Soprano Karla M. Hughes has performed across the United States in a wide range of repertoire spanning Opera, Oratorio, and Music Theatre. Performing credits in Opera and Music Theatre include Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Gretel in Hansel and Gretel, Julie in Carousel, Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof, Sophie in Terrance McNally’s Master Class, Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance, John Adams in 1776 (all female cast), and Despina in Così fan tutte. In November of 2018, she will perform the role of Adele in Die Fledermaus with Winter Opera St. Louis.
In 2011, Karla made her Lincoln Center debut in Avery Fisher Hall as the soprano soloist in Mozart’s Coronation Mass, KV 317 "Kronungsmesse", presented by Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY). Other oratorio credits include the soprano soloist in Carmina Burana, Poulenc’s Gloria, Handel’s Messiah, and Mozart’s Requiem.
As a recording artist, she can be heard in the roles of Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance and Yum-Yum in The Mikado with Albany Records. Karla currently resides in La Crosse, Wisconsin with her husband and three rescue dogs. She is an Associate Professor of Music Theatre at Viterbo University.
Baritone Gary Moss enjoys a varied repertoire that includes Opera, Oratorio, Operetta and Musical Theater. Gary was a regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2003. He has sung roles with opera companies around the country such as Michigan Opera Theater, Toledo Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Washington East Opera, The Ohio Light Opera and Skylight Opera Theater.
Dr. Moss holds an undergraduate degree in vocal performance from the University of Utah, and both a master's degree and a doctorate in vocal performance from the University of Michigan, where he studied with Lorna Haywood and Martin Katz.
Recent engagements include the roles Wilfred Shadbolt in Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Yeomen of the Guard, Schaunard in "Puccini's La Boheme", Danilo Danilowich in Lehar's "The Merry Widow", Billy Bigelow in "Carousel", Pirate King in Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance", and Fresco in Herbert's "The Fortune Teller".
In March of 2008, Gary joined the roster of Wade Artist Management. In addition, he currently serves on the Voice Faculty at Luther College and the Musical Theater Faculty at Viterbo University.
Brittany Kamrath is the choir director at Prescott High School in Prescott, WI.
She grew up in Chetek, WI in a musical household with a band director and church pianist for parents. Brittany has performed and choreographed musicals throughout college, and is just beginning the third annual musical in Prescott School District. Over the past 8 years, Prescott Middle and High School Choirs have more than tripled in size. During that time, she has added two contemporary a capella groups, a show choir, a women’s choir, piano classes, and a music theory course. Brittany believes that everyone can sing and finds most joy in getting to know her students and learning alongside them.
Brittany also directs the church choir at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Basswood Grove, and is currently starting a vespers worship program for youth in Prescott.
